It was literally carved out of a single rock

Yes! You read it correct!! The temple is carved out of a single rock of the Charanandri hills at Ellora village. The architectures were so skillful that you won’t find any joints in the temple.

 

Carved from top to bottom

One of the unbelievable facts is that it was carved from top to bottom using only chisels and hammers. Even today, it is impossible for architectures to build something like this from top to bottom!

 

Oldest of its kind

The temple is one of the oldest mono-rock sculpture complexes in the world. During an archaeological survey, the temple surprised Western archaeologists who found it twice that of Parthenon in Athens.

 

Tons of rock scooped out

Archaeologists believe that the sculptors took more than four hundred tons of stones to build impressive Kailash temple. Even today, it is impossible to complete such task using the largest 10-ton JCB machine. Dhwajasthamba is a famous rocky pillar which is just as intriguing.

 

It took 150 years to be constructed

More than 7,000 labors worked nearly 150 years to carve the Kailash temple. This only shows that the amount of work performed by every labor is equals to a mammoth and unmatched even today.

 

Labors worked 16 hours a day

The labors worked for about 16 hours a day. Since there was no electricity at that time, they used mirrors to reflect the light inside the cave. Even today, it is quite dark inside.

 

Build with Vedic tradition

As is the Vedic tradition, prior to starting the construction of the Kailash Temple, the sculptors performed a Mahayagna and asked for permission from the rock to build the temple. The priests sacrificed and energized the rock by chanting mantras. That is why even today, when people chant mantras, it echoes and resonates around in a strange way.

Every pillar of the Kailash temple speaks of the Divine language and is equipped with a definite inheritance. The view from the top of the rock shows a large scale of all construction.
