11 Interesting Facts About The Angel Falls


Where is Angel Falls?

Angel Falls is in the Gran Sabana region of Bolívar state, southeastern Venezuela. Flows into the Churún River, is tributary of the Carrao River, 260 km southeast of Ciudad Bolívar. 


Some Interesting Facts


#1: It’s World’s Highest Waterfall.

Angel Falls is famous because it is the highest continuous waterfall in the world. It falls from a cleft near the mountain of the Auyán-Tepui at the 979 meters (3212 feet) Devil’s Canyon with the longest fall of 807 meters (2647 feet).

 

#2: The Height & Width of Angel Falls.

The Angel Falls is 979 meters (3,212 feet) tall or you can say that it is three times taller than the Eiffel Tower, the landmark of Paris.

It is 150 meters (500 feet) wide at the base.

 

#3: Origin of ‘Angel Falls’ Name.

The waterfall is named after American Gold Prospector James Crawford Angel (also known as Jimmie Angel). He flew over the mountain in 1933 and accidentally found Angel Falls while looking for a valuable ore. Amazed by its beautiful view, James returned to the waterfall in 1937 accompanied by his wife and acquaintance.

 

Jimmie landed his plane successfully at the top of Auyán-Tepui Mountain. However, the aircraft’s wheels were submerged in the mud and remained there until 1970. The group of trekkers trekked across rough terrain for 11 days and thus, the world became aware of the discovery of Jimmie and the waterfall was named after Jimmie Angel.

The rest is history, and Angel Falls has become the wonder tale around the world. Jimmie’s plane is kept at the Aeronautics Museum of Maracay for exhibition.

 

#4: Importance of Its Name.

Pemon language: Kerepakupai Merú meaning “waterfall of the deepest place”, or Parakupá Vená meaning “the fall from the highest point”. In Spanish it is known as Salto Ángel.

 

#5: Renaming of the Falls.

In 2009, Hugo Chávez, President of Venezuela, announced his desire to change the falls’ name to its indigenous Pemon term: Kerepakupai Merú.

 

#6: Weather of the Falls.

In the rainy season, the waterfall creates its weather. People can feel the mists settles on their skin if they are in a radius of one kilometer from the waterfall during the season.

 

#7: Was Discovered in 20th Century.

While approximately all the natural wonders were discovered before 20th century, Angel Falls was discovered in mid-20th century, which is much later.

 

#8: Canaima National Park

Canaima National Park is the second largest national park in Venezuela and Gateway of Angel Falls. The park is almost the size of Belgium. It was founded in 1962 and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994. The Canaima National Park has two segments - east and west. Angel Falls is located in the west.

 

The waterfall plunges on the edge of the mountain Auyán-Tepui in the Canaima National Park. This park contains an incredible tropical fauna with its incredible views.

Various kinds of exotic wildlife those are extraordinary surrounding the waterfall. This is a habitat for 500 species of birds and orchids, ocelot, and others. This includes poison arrow frogs and monkeys. In addition to monkeys, people rarely can see mammals in the area. However, giant anteaters, Armadillo, Hedgehogs, three-toed Sloths, beaver, Jaguar, Puma, Tapir, and Capybaras are seen sometimes.

 

#10: Movies Inspired By Angel Falls.

Disney’s 2009 animated film ‘Up’ was inspired by Angel Falls. There is a similar waterfall in movie called Paradise Falls. It was also featured in 2015 movie ‘Point Break’.

 

#11: Tourism

The government of Venezuela has authorized tourism to Angel Falls since 1990. The first visitors stayed in the Boulton camp, now known as Campamento Canaima.

It is one of the most popular tourist attraction in Venezuela.
