What is Phnom Kulen?
Phnom Kulen is a mountain range and a part of Phnom Kulen National Park.
Where is Phnom Kulen?
Phnom Kulen is located in
Northwest Cambodia. And is some 48 km (30 mile) north from Siem Reap province.
Facts:
1. Phnom Kulen’s highest
point is 487 metres (1,598 ft). It’s height is quite regular, averaging 400
metres (1,300 ft) all along the hills.

2. Phnom Kulen is made
of sandstone. It was a major quarry in Angkorian times; other major quarries
are being located in southeastern part of the range.
3. Back in 802 AD, King
Jayavarman II declared himself as the ‘Devaraja’ (God-King) at its peak.
4. Phnom Kulen name
means “Mountain of the Lychees”. It is also called ‘Kulen Mountain’. During the
Angkorian era the relief was known as “Mahendraparvata” (the mountain of great
Indra).

5. Chup Preah is a strem
flowing into the mountain’s valley. It has two waterfalls. First one is between
4–5 metres (13-16 ft) high and 20-25 metres (66-82 ft) wide. And the second one
is 15-20 metres (49-66 ft) high and 10-15 metres (33-49 ft) wide.
6. Kbal Spean is known
for its significance carvings of Hindu Gods.Just 5 centimetres under the water’s
surface, there are more than 1000 linga carvings are etched into the sandstone.
This carvings include Hindu god Vishnu lying on his serpent Ananta, with his
wife Lakshmi at his feet. A lotus flower protrudes from God Vishnu’s navel
bearing the god Brahma, Lord Shiva, Ganesh and many more!

7. Preah Ang Thom is
near Kulen Mountains, a Buddhist monastery notable for giant reclining Buddha
statue, the country’s largest.
8. There is a sanctuary in
the area, Phnom Kulen National Park. Its purpose is recreational and scientific
in order to preserve the natural scenic of the Phnom Kulen Moontain. This park
is 48 kilometres (30 miles) north of provincial town of the Siem Reap.

9. The Phnom Kulen was
listed as the World Heritage Site by UNESCO on 27th March, 2020. If you are planning a trip to Cambodia, Phnon Kulen is a
famous and worth to visit place there.
